If you’ve been drinking alcohol for a long time, it may
be hard to make a sudden stop. However, you should not be discouraged. You only
need to take the first step and the rest will be easy enough with a little
help.
Most alcohol
rehabilitation programs have detoxification as their first step. It is
aimed at eliminating the harmful elements that may have taken a toll of your
body after years or even decades of consuming alcohol.
Determining Your
Detox Program
Two of the factors to consider when choosing the best
course for detoxification is the period of time you’ve been taking alcohol and
how much you depend on it. Low dependency levels don’t require the assistance
of medication in coping with withdrawal symptoms. However, you may have to work
with a doctor and take prescription drugs to help you manage the withdrawal
symptoms if you have been heavily drinking for a long time and you need
assistance in dealing with the effects of withdrawal on your body.
Mild alcoholics can always detox at home with the advice
of a rehab professional. However, you may be advised to spend several days as
an inpatient at the rehabilitation clinic if your alcohol dependency levels are
extremely high. In these cases, since the withdrawal symptoms are likely to be
severe and may bring about seizures and even death, you’ll need special
attention from the rehabilitation staff.
Remember, the presence of alcohol in your body does more
harm than good by far. Nevertheless, detoxification is just the beginning of
the journey toward an addiction-free life. It involves a full recovery program
that you will need to participate in for a long time.
My withdrawal symptoms during my time as a recovering addict were not all that bad. Unfortunate,y that's not the case for everyone. Good post!
